Apply for an embalmers licence

Use this service to apply for or renew an embalmers licence with the Environmental Health Department.

Who is this licence for

You need a licence if you conduct embalming services in Barbados.

Before you start

You will need:

  • your current embalmers licence number (if renewing)
  • a photo or scanned copy of your Barbados National Identification card
  • a passport sized photograph
  • your qualification in embalming from an institution of embalming approved by the chief medical officer; or
  • letter evidencing your engagement in the practice of embalming for a period of more than five (5) years, or having worked under the direct supervision of an approved embalmer for more than three (3) years, if you were engaged in the business prior to the regulations coming into operation in 1984

When to apply

Your licence expires on December 31st each year. You need to renew it by the first business day in January each year. It is suggested that you submit your application by December 1st.

There are 2 ways to apply for an embalmers licence. You can:

  1. Apply for a licence online.

  2. Get a paper application from the polyclinic
    You must complete it by hand and submit the application to the polyclinic associated with the district where your personal address is located. If you require further information or assistance, contact a polyclinic - information can be found at the bottom of this page.

Cost

There is neither a cost to apply, nor to receive your licence.

What happens after you apply

  • Your application goes to the Environmental Health Service associated with your location. If additional information or documentation is required, you will be contacted by an Environmental Health Officer.

Obtaining your licence:

  • If your application is approved, you will receive a confirmation email and the Environmental Health Office will mail your licence. In addition, you can also request to collect it from your assigned polyclinic.
