Apply for a hairdressing and beautician business licence

Use this service to apply for or renew a hairdressing salon licence.

Who is this licence for

You must apply for a hairdressing salon licence if your business provides any of these services to the public:

  • hairdressing or barbering
  • beauty services
  • manicures
  • pedicures
  • hair braiding

Anyone providing these services also needs their own personal hairdressers licence. The business licence does not give the owner or staff a licence.

This applies whether you provide services:

  • at a business location
  • from home (for example, at-home hairdressers)
  • at clients' locations or from a vehicle

If your business is not licensed, Environmental Health will contact you and inform you that you need to apply. They may issue a notice if an application is not made.

Before you start

You will need:

  • your current hairdressing salon licence number (if renewing)
  • the name and address of the business
  • the name and address of the owner or operator
  • a document listing your hairdressing staff, giving each person's name and gender (staff list)
  • medical certificates of all hairdressing staff
  • a vehicle registration number if the business uses a vehicle

Uploading medical certificates is optional. You can show them during the inspection instead.

When to apply

Your licence expires on December 31st each year. You need to renew it by the first business day in January each year. It is suggested that you submit your application by December 1st.

There are 2 ways to apply for a hairdressing salon licence. You can:

  1. Apply for a licence online.

  2. Get a paper application from the polyclinic
    You must complete it by hand and submit the application to the polyclinic associated with the district where the hairdressing salon is located. If you require further information or assistance, contact the polyclinic - information can be found at the bottom of this page.

Cost

There is neither a cost to apply, nor to receive your licence.

What happens after you apply

Environmental Health will review your application and inspect the business.

During the inspection, you will need to show:

  • your cleaning schedule of the premises and equipment
  • the cleaning and sanitation process of the equipment including towels
  • facilities with hot and cold water
  • any staff medical certificates you did not upload

If you provide services from a vehicle, Environmental Health will need to arrange an inspection of the vehicle.

Obtaining your licence:

  • If your application is approved, you will receive a confirmation email and the Environmental Health Office will mail your licence. In addition, you can also request to collect it from your assigned polyclinic.

Once you receive your licence, it must be displayed in the establishment.
