Apply for a hairdresser or beautician licence

Use this service to apply for or renew a hairdresser licence with the Environmental Health Department.

Who is this licence for

You must register with Environmental Health if you provide any of these services to the public:

  • hairdressing or barbering
  • beauty services
  • manicures
  • pedicures
  • hair braiding

This applies whether you provide services:

  • at a business location
  • from home (for example, at-home hairdressers)
  • at clients' locations or from a vehicle

Before you start

You will need:

  • your current hairdresser licence number (if renewing)
  • a recent passport-size photograph
  • your Barbados National Identification (ID) number
  • a medical certificate of fitness from a registered medical practitioner

Note: Your passport-size photograph is valid for 5 years.

When to apply

Your licence expires on December 31st each year. You need to renew it by the first business day in January each year. It is suggested that you submit your application by December 1st.

There are 2 ways to apply for a hairdresser licence. You can:

  1. Apply for a licence online.

  2. Get a paper application from the polyclinic
    You must complete it by hand and submit the application to the polyclinic associated with the district where your personal address is located. If you require further information or assistance, contact a polyclinic - information can be found at the bottom of this page.

Cost

There is neither a cost to apply, nor to receive your licence.

What happens after you apply

  • Your application goes to the Environmental Health Service associated with your location. If additional information or documentation is required, you will be contacted by an Environmental Health Officer.

Obtaining your licence:

  • If your application is approved, you will receive a confirmation email and the Environmental Health Office will mail your licence. In addition, you can also request to collect it from your assigned polyclinic.
