Apply for a position as a temporary teacher

If you want to be a temporary teacher in a government-funded primary school in Barbados, you must apply. If your application meets the requirements and a suitable position becomes available, you may be contacted for an interview.

Who is eligible to apply?

To apply, you need to:

• be a Barbadian citizen or a CARICOM national with the right to work

• have at least 5 CXC subjects at CSEC general proficiency level, including English language, maths and a science subject

How to apply

Watch for vacancy notices

Job vacancies are advertised all year round but the number increases over the summer months ahead of the new school year which starts in September. You can look out for updates on the Ministry of Educational Transformation or Government Information Service websites.

Complete an application form

At the moment, you can only apply online by completing the Application for registration as temporary/acting teacher form. You can find it on the Ministry of Educational Transformation website under the ‘resources’ tab in the menu, and then the ‘download forms’ option.

Gather your supporting information

You’ll also need to share:

1. Your curriculum vitae (CV).

2. The name and contact details of 2 referees and their short letters of recommendation (a paragraph is enough).

You can upload these and submit them with your online application.

After you apply

If you meet the qualification requirements and a suitable position becomes available, you will be invited for an interview. At this point you will need to share:

1. Certified copies of your academic and teaching qualifications. You can get them certified by a Justice of the peace.

2. Proof of citizenship, for example, your passport or ID card. Or, proof of your immigration status and your work permit.

3. A recent Police Certificate of Character. You can apply for one here. The fee is BBD $20.

Successful applicants

If you are successful, you will receive a letter of appointment.
